Lucy's New Sidelight

This project is about 6 feet tall and one foot wide. There is only one window involved. I created a design that incorporated pansys (that Lucy adores), tulips and fushcia. And of course, if you have fushcia, you must have a humming bird.

Drawing and redrawing the design 12/06

After the drawing is transferred to graph paper and sticky-back paper using carbon paper, the pieces are cut out and placed on glass to be cut. 1/12/07

The glass is cut and placed on the template.

When a section is complete, then the glass is ground on the edges to help the copperfoil to adhere. 1/16/07

I spent about 3 hours today, cutting, grinding and placing the bottom 1/3 of the panel. - the pansy section. Still have 1.5 more pansy's to go, then I start on the tulips...

Today I laid out the tulips, trying to balance the colors. I got the pink and yellow ones cut and ground today and will do the red and white ones next. I love that red color! The green of the leaves will be lighter and a little more yellowy than the pansy leaves.

The colors seem darker than they will with light coming through them. Also the blue/purple is deceiving because there are many more colors in them when the light shines through.

Over this last weekend I foiled the rest of the pansy section and the tulips. I cut out the leaves and stems for the tulips and will foil them this week.

The leaves all look the same color, but their density is quite different and will be very noticable when light shines through the glass.

It has been a while since I could do more on this project - but finally got the leaves foiled. Next step is to lay out the blue glass templates, check that they fit, then place them on the glass for cutting.

My pal during this project has been Marshmellow. She watches and purrs and keeps me company while I cut and grind the next batch of glass...

We are now about 2/3rds done with cutting and foiling. Now I get to start on the hummingbird and fuschia. The bird will have different glass than the flowers - deep colors but transparent. The glass will look almost black with no light behind it.

Lucy came over to visit this weekend and inspired me to 'get this puppy done'...that lasted about one day, when my time got stolen from me once again with graphics jobs. But before that, I was able to complete the glass cutting and foiled the hummingbird-fuschia section.

Spring break hasn't been a total loss. I did clean up the 'ugly' pieces that didn't fit well enough for me, refit the overall size so there is 1/4" leeway between edge of window and lead and started soldering the top third of the project.

Well, I have used up all my solder on this side of the panel, but I am ready to turn the whole thing over and start soldering the outside of the window. This second side will take less time since some solder has already oozed through to this side.

The pansys have the center 'black' part on the flower. Of course, all the silver solder will be blackened by patina after all the window is complete on both sides.

Last weekend Hilary helped me flip the window over. I have soldered 2/3 of it so far and applied patina (makes the solder dark - lead color). Once I am done with the second side, I flip it again, fix the blobs of solder that eeked through, add the stamen for the fuschia, then can patina that side.

I will put a little putty around the edge lead.... THEN, Lucy, you need to call Chuck so he can get what he needs to install the window .... while we do the cleaning and polishing.

May 8, 2007, on a beautiful sunny, warm day, Bruce came over to Lucy's, cut the trim pieces and installed the window. Voila! Fini!
